The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) was established in 1962 to coordinate research and graduate training at the University of Ghana. It was called the School of Research and Graduate Studies (SRGS) until 2010/2011, when the research function was hived off to form the now Office of Research, Innovation, and Development (ORID). Currently, the School is responsible for coordinating graduate-level training at the University of Ghana and its numerous affiliates and associates. The School is headed by a Dean, assisted by a Vice-Dean and a School Administrator. The School is responsible for graduate admissions, registration and orientation, student records, examination of theses/dissertations, approval of results, and graduation.
The School performs its mandated functions under the direction of the Board of the School of Graduate Studies, chaired by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. Membership of the Board is made up of four (4) representatives each from the four Colleges in the University, two (2) representatives from the Academic Board, and two (2) representatives from the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG).
Message from the Dean
Welcome to the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) of the University of Ghana. The School co-ordinates all graduate level academic programmes for the Colleges, Schools, Institutes/Centres and Departments within the University. As part of its coordinating role, the School’s mandate includes: Promoting the development, diversification and effective delivery of post-graduate programmes to address emerging national issues; and Accreditation of all faculty teaching and supervising graduate programmes to maintain high standards and ensure high quality graduate programme output. Additionally, the School deals with all matters which have to do with admission, registration and records, examination of theses and dissertations, official correspondence and welfare of graduate students. It also regulates and offers advice on graduate programmes being offered in the University’s affiliate institutions.
